Book and movie review the prequel to practical magic , magic lessons, was just released, and it sounded really interesting.

Those already familiar with practical magic will recognize the area where aunt franny and aunt jet eventually take in their nieces in the big house where the owens women live. If you read that, you’ll know how much i hated the book. Which knowing this was written two decades ago, that doesn’t disappoint me at all. This book is very heavy on relationships, both platonic and romantic. I loved the spooky vibe from the very beginning of this!

While the book’s ending is ridiculously soppy, at that point the sisters had gone through so much over the course of the novel they really deserved their happy ending. My first hoffman read was faithful and i fell in love immediately. Then i discovered all the other books she has written and i’m slowly working my way through them. It’s a product of it’s time, and where the writer was when she wrote it. So, i did a review on the book practical magic a while ago.

First of all, there was barely any magic in the book.

The story transpires over years, allowing the reader to really get to know sally and gillian. They skim over it in the movie in just the right way without overly drowning you in emotions. The book and movie are divorced from each other to an extent that even the characters felt unfamiliar. The movie is beautiful, the storyline is engaging and witty, and the charactersdraw you in and make you laugh and cry. I have to admit, it’s been a long time since i’ve been conflicted by a book, so many mixed feelings!

Reviewed by jana siciliano on october 23, 2020. Antonia and kylie’s love for each other, in particular, really made the book for me. While the movie was set in that gorgeous house in a small town, the book was actually set in the suburbs in sally’s house. But, the book was something entirely different from the movie, which is a very charming and delightful adaptation, in my opinion. Looking forward to another modern story later this year.

Practical magic is about two sisters, sally and gillian owens. A few weeks ago i finished reading practical magic by alice hoffman. It still had the same wonderful characters with a crazy, but fantastical plot line, but it wasn't as swoon worthy as the movie. Practical magic by alice hoffman is the story of sally. It is much more narrative, and less whimsical history book.
